2025
I made this quilt during most of 2025. This was my first real attempt at quilting, inspired by this documentary, and I am super proud of it. The color scheme came from putting together the only complimentary colors in my small fabric collection, but halfway through piecing the quilt, I scheduled my bottom surgery and the colors became more meaningful…. And everything lined up nicely to allow me to do the hand quilting as a project for my recovery. Knowing what I know now, I would have cut and pieced it much faster, but this was honestly not that conceptually hard of a first quilting project; just tedious :). Things always look more neat than they really are once they're finished!! This project started my quilting obsession..... more large scale work coming soon

I tried to distribute all the accent colors evenly throughout the quilt.
Each pinwheel in each corner and the center is made from one of one of the 5 accent colors. I wish i had known about chain piecing.....
I hand quilted 2 sets of circles using the felt as a template. The 1st set of circles was inside the squares and alternated between tan and red thread. The 2nd set of circles was on the intersections of the squares and alternated between white and dark red/brown thread. I learned to quilt from this video, which includes the essential skill of burying your knot between the layers of the quilt. This woman's website is amazing. I love all the passed down problem solving that is part of these crafts! Btw, stitching with a thimble worn on your index or middle finger is a very important foundational skill which I'm glad I learned before attempting this type of hand quilting.
I originally planned on folding over the bottom sheet to bind the quilt, but the internet told me this is not durable... so I bound the quilt with a separate strip following this tutorial. The ladder stitch was extremely satisfying to me.
